DO YOU KNOW WHAT CHILDREN LEARN IN MONTESSORI SCHOOLS
Starting school is one of the biggest changes in the child’s life. Therefore, parents rightly want to make the best possible decisions and choose the best possible school for their child. There are many reasons why I want to point out to you why Montessori schools are the best choice for your child.
In Montessori schools, educators are not the only ones who teach children. Older children often help younger ones by teaching them how to master certain skills. The name Montessori is not protected by law and can be used by anyone for any purpose – this is important for anyone looking for a good Montessori school or Montessori teachers to know.
The Montessori program was founded by pediatrician Maria Montessori in 1907 and this program emphasizes the importance and connection between all living beings as well as the need for each person to find her role, meaning and goal of existence. The Montessori program encourages the child’s sense of independence and educators always ask children if they want to try to solve a certain task, if they need help in what they are doing or if they think they are not ready for it.
Montessori pedagogy believes that a child from birth to the age of six has an “absorbing mind” and that this ingenious possibility of mental absorption enables children to learn their native language, improve body movements and adopt certain rules. Another important thing that Maria Montessori noticed is that children go through certain sensitive periods of life in their personality development.
These periods in a child’s life are when the child, with a certain stimulus from his environment, has acquired new knowledge or new skills, and can be noticed in all children at approximately the same age. The essence is that these periods are the ideal time for the development of a certain skill or the acquisition of a certain knowledge.
A child between the ages of three and six goes through the process of emergence of consciousness and will, and thus slowly becomes a self-conscious being. By applying Montessori philosophy and Montessori materials (special didactic materials developed by Maria Montessori and used in education) provide the child with opportunities to gather new knowledge and to continuously develop his consciousness.
FOUR MAIN AREAS IN THE PRESCHOOL PROGRAM
1. Practical life:
Children learn how to tie shoes, how to hang a jacket on a hanger, prepare snacks and drinks for themselves, go to the bathroom without anyone’s help and if they spill something, they learn to clean it up after themselves.
The exercises are designed so that children use all five senses to acquire knowledge from the environment. For example, a child learns about falling leaves by using his sense of touch to feel how fragile the leaves are.
Children are encouraged to express themselves verbally and learn to recognize and follow certain letters. This forms the basis for later learning to read and write.
Children learn about numbers with the help of their hands using special Montessori materials, and thus master addition, multiplication and other mathematical operations with ease and joy.
The fifth area that should not be neglected and to which is also paid attention is learning about music, art, animals, geography…
All areas studied are interconnected. Toys and didactic materials used for learning are placed everywhere in the classroom, so when the child enters, can see what is offered and choose a task that will solve according to his own interest. Books, puzzles, art projects are used for tasks solving … When a child successfully solves a task, he puts his work on the shelf and moves on to another problem solving.
The daily schedule provides for children to play alone or in groups. Most educators work with children one-on-one, but the greatest progress has been made when children work with each other.
